BEING A MAN in the know,
Frank Prokop suggested a
host of great spots for deep sea fishing along the WA coastline.
HAMELIN BAY This South West location is known as the best dhufish location
in WA and perhaps the world, according to Frank. The best time to get your
catch of the day is from early August and all of spring.
ABROLHOS ISLANDS Off the coast from Geraldton, get your hands on some
delicious western rock lobster. The season for lobster fishing in the Abrolhos
is from March 15 to June 30 and make sure you have a licence (more details
can be found at www.fish.wa.gov.au).
DAMPIER Way up north in the Pilbara region, Dampier is the place to go
for mackerel, sailfish, wahoo and tuna. Unless you like scorching heat (think
45°C), winter is the time to go.
AFTER A BIG day out at the beach, and for those fishing expeditions that were
more about beer and bluster than fish, silence the stomach growling with the
quintessential beach meal -- fish n' chips. Step from the deep fryer to the sand
at the following coastal chippies;
CHEFFY'S at Surfside in Yallingup, Dawson Drive off Yallingup Beach Road.
Try Cheffy's mouthwatering oyster special for something different.
CICCERELLO'S, Mandurah's Peel Inlet. This place is an institution in
Fremantle, serving some of the most delicious seafood in the state. Kids love it
too for the internal aquarium and frightening shark attack display.
COLOUR PATCH in Augusta, 98 Albany Terrace. You might be pulling up a
plastic chair, but don't let it put you off as the "Patch" serves up delicious fish
n' chips and the view of the Augusta inlet is just the thing to aid digestion. Try
the locally sourced Blackwood River whiting.
ARISTOS (pictured) on Thomson Bay, Rottnest. The celebrity chef has set up
a seafood restaurant on the island's busiest bay. Delicious.

STRONG SWELL AND strong and
steady sea-breezes that cut across the
waves has Lancelin considered as one
of the top four windsurfing locations
in the world. In the summer months
the population swells to 2000 and
attracts an international community
of dedicated enthusiasts that makes
it a must-visit destination for local
windsurfers. The best time of year
is from December to February when
reliable sea breezes reach around
18 to 25 knots most afternoons.
See how the pros do it at the biggest
and longest running windsurfing
event in Australia -- the Lancelin
Ocean Classic. From January 7-10,
2010, you can see a selection of
windsurfing events composed of
wave sailing, marathon and slalom.

AS RECOMMENDED BY Frank Prokop, Recfishwest's Executive Director
and author of 13 books on recreational fishing, here are the top three
locations for beach fishing in regional Western Australia.
BUNKER BAY Not only home to the luxurious Quay West Resort Bunker
Bay, Frank says this is the best spot for reeling in salmon in the South
West. Easter is the ideal time, which makes me wonder if perhaps the
Good Lord Almighty may have played a hand in the matter. No excuse
to avoid fish on Good Friday if you're southbound.
WILLIE CREEK, just outside Broome -- all year round, except winter,
head to the creek for mangrove jack, trevally and cod.
POISON CREEK, ESPERANCE Not one for the superstitious, but if you're
willing to get past the spot's name, head to Poison Creek any time of the
year for salmon, skipjack trevally, tarwhine and Australian herring. 28
