a perfect place for a swim.
Both beaches are distinguished by the smooth
rounded granite boulders, which are a feature of
the national park, and stretch out into the ocean.
The boulders at Elephant Rocks really do look
like herd of pachyderms splashing around in the
Walk west along the hard white sand and you'll
find that the beach seems to go on forever.
And perhaps after all this eating and exercise,
what you need is a little pampering, you should
know that the Denmark area is now home to a
couple of spa retreats, ready to pamper and soothe
your aches and pains -- and cares -- away.
MOUNT BARKER'S MAGIC
A short drive north of Albany and you come to
Mount Barker, a picturesque farming area that is
also home to some of the state's best wineries.
As one of the first places to have been explored
in WA -- in 1829 -- Mount Barker has a number of
lovingly preserved buildings, including the convict-
built Old Police Station and the extraordinary St
Werburgh's Chapel -- which looks like something
out of a fairytale -- where candle-lit services and
weddings are still held (the chapel has never had
electricity). There is a 30km heritage trail that
takes you through this beautiful farming region
and to many sites of historical interest.
Mt Barker is also a bit of a mecca for
wildflower enthusiasts, who come this way every
spring and the town hosts a wildflower festival in
September/October each year. The town also has
thriving industry in wildflower cultivation. There
is a wide range of accommodation available in
the town and in nearby districts, ranging from the
cosy to the luxurious.
I have always believed that a fine view is
complemented by a fine wine and if you are driving
around looking at flowers and historic sites, you
really ought to stop to sample the wine on offer at
the region's myriad vineyards and cellar doors.
Several fine wineries have made their home
between Mount Barker and Frankland regions
and the cool-climate wine region of Frankland
is home to some particularly nice cellar doors.
The area -- again, nestled in some the state's finest
agricultural land -- is also home to a successful
olive industry and it is well worth making part of
a day-trip drive from Albany or Denmark, perhaps
encompassing Mt Barker, Frankland and the
Alternatively, plan your trip to and from the
Great Southern so that it takes in a stopover at
some of the region's wineries. Sampling fine pinot
noir certainly beats stretching your legs at a dusty
roadhouse, sampling chocolate milk and Chiko rolls.
