drive to the beach. The Preston Beach Golf Club is
also conveniently located right next door.
With a general store and local cafe, Preston
provides all you need for an easy beach holiday
and is a great base from which to explore the rest
of the region.
The Geographe wine region is developing quickly
with several wineries now making the 5-star cut
in the esteemed James Halliday Australian Wine
Companion for 2010.
Willow Bridge Estate is the most serious of
wineries in the region, and has been a 5-star
performer for many years. It picked up numerous
awards at the 2009 Geographe Wine Show,
including gold for their 2008 Dragonfly Sauvignon
Blanc Semillon, and two silvers for their 2007
Dragonfly Shiraz and 2008 Solana Tempranillo.
The classic Black Dog Shiraz remains popular
with drinkers and critics alike, with its rich plum
and vanilla flavours making it one of the most
heavily awarded wines produced there.
Harris River Estate is a little-known but
outstanding new development that jumped from
a 3-star to a 5-star rating in 2010. The winery's
2007 Chardonnay and 2007 Verdelho turned up
top marks, each receiving a James Halliday rating
of 94 out of 100. Senior winemaker Julie Hillier is
Scottish-born and full of energy.
She and husband Karl both have corporate
backgrounds and bring some much-needed energy
and innovation to the region. The cellar door-
come-restaurant is delightful, with views across
the vines and water glistening below. The winery's
bimonthly themed food nights have also proved a
huge success, selling out well in advance.
The inaugural Scottish-themed Highland
Games are to be held at the winery in February,
with a range of games and activities promising to
make for a great day.
REST OF THE BEST
There are plenty of other wineries punching above
their weight in Harvey, the Ferguson Valley and
Donnybrook; mostly boutique owner-operators
with small cellar doors and loads of personality.
Brookhampton Estate is the largest and one of
the most picturesque wineries in the region. Don't
miss the hugely popular Brookhampton Vineyard
Concert it hosts in February.
Five minutes away, nestled among the jarrah
trees, is Byramgou Park Winery, which combines
the cellar door with a fascinating display of
Papua New Guinea artefacts and weapons.
Oakway Estate picked up a 4-star James
Halliday rating and is worth visiting, with a cellar
door nearing completion.
Another stunning property is Mandalay Road
Winery, which has a cute cellar door, and the
drive there along the valley is one of the region's
In the Ferguson Valley
Wovenfield continues to produce outstanding
wines and features a cosy cellar door with a
balcony overlooking the vines.
