DIAMOND AMONG THE COAL MINES
Just two hours from Perth, Collie is fast becoming
a popular tourist destination with its historic
township, thick forests and stunning waterways.
Start out at the newly built Collie Visitor Centre
where there are several old locomotives for the
kids to climb over. The Railway Station, Coalfields
Museum and beautiful heritage architecture
around town give a fascinating insight into Collie's
past, while a range of cute and contemporary
shops reflects the town's bright atmosphere.
MICHAEL LANE JEWELLERS
Visit this store by appointment to find something
gorgeous and glittering. Michael Lane has worked
in Collie for three years, having moved there from
the US to be with his wife whom he met over the
Internet! Michael creates one-off pieces which
are supplied to a number of art galleries, and also
specialises in restoring vintage or sentimental items.
Join the locals at one of the pretty picnic spots
around Honeymoon Pool, Harris Dam and
Soldiers Park (which also has great playground
equipment to keep the kids busy). There are
many more stunning locations along Lennard
Drive; a one-way, bitumen road nestled between
Wellington Dam and the Ferguson Valley. Thick
jarrah and marri tree forest makes this region a
fine example of Australian bush. Take the turnoff
to Potters Gorge and you will find a serene dam,
Geographe Wine Region
which spills spectacularly when the water is high
enough. This, along with the creek, water pools,
tadpoles and granite rocks, provides plenty of
distractions for the kids to enjoy.
WHERE TO STAY
There is a limited range of beautiful, boutique
accommodation available mostly in Harvey and
the Ferguson Valley.
Ferguson Farmstay stands out with its quality
accommodation perfect for couples, families or
small groups. The new tennis court and nature
trek dotted with picnic shelters and bridges make
this lodging a perfect country getaway.
There is also a range of accommodation
options in Bunbury (see our guide), which makes a
convenient base from which to explore the region.
