With its central location just an hour away from
Northcliffe and Manjimup, Pemberton is the
perfect place to start your journey in the Southern
Visit the Pemberton Visitor Centre on the
main street and chat to friendly staff with a
sound knowledge of the area. It's also a great
place to uncover local history, with the Pioneer
Museum displaying artefacts, tools, photos and
memorabilia in a large-scale settler's hut. The
Karri Forest Discovery Centre is next door, with
interactive tours of the region's famous forests.
ON YOUR BIKE
The Southern Forest is a top biking destination
with spectacular trails attracting Olympic athletes
and nature lovers from around the world. The
Federation Trail in Northcliffe is great for
beginners, covering an easy 600m through the
scenic Jubilee Park Arboretum. Experienced riders
should try the Boorara State Championship Trail,
which contains several downhill sections and
The annual Karri Cup Challenge is also held
in Northcliffe, attracting hundreds of riders with
its course covering 100km of scenic forest. Don't
miss the 2010 event from February 27 -- 28.
The bicycle beat is set to expand further, with
the new Pemberton Mountain Bike Track due for
completion in January. Starting near Pemberton
Pool, the trail will contain various stages suitable
for all ages and abilities.
EXPLORING THE SOUTHERN
FOREST WITH KIDS
While the odds of spotting a fairy are slim,
spectacular wildlife, enormous trees and magical
countryside should be enough to inspire the
imaginative minds of wee travellers.
A number of short walking tracks close to
Pemberton are suitable for kids of all ages,
including the ever-popular 3km Gloucester Tree
Walk. Another scenic option is the 4km Big Brook
Dam loop, where you can enjoy lunch at one of
the many pretty picnic spots along the way.
It's also a great location for canoeing and
swimming during summer.
Further south in Walpole, the Valley of the Giants
Treetop Walk is an awesome experience elevated 38m
above the forest floor. The walk is open everyday of
the year (except Christmas) from 9 -- 5pm. Understory
in Northcliffe is an art-meets-nature installation, with
more than 50 sculptures by local and international
artists adorning a 1.2km walk trail through native
forest. The experience is enhanced by audio tours
created specifically for adults or kids, featuring
relevant music, stories and artist interviews. The
trail is open daily from 9 - 4pm.
If your family is keen for a more rigorous
expedition, try part of the Bibbulmun Track
which passes through the region. The 20km section
from Pemberton to Beedelup is popular day trip.
Otherwise you can enjoy picnic and barbecue
facilities at the Gloucester Tree before embarking
on a 6km trail to the Cascades. If it all sounds too
hard to organise by yourself, Pemberton Hiking and
Canoeing Company can help arrange full or half
day walks that cater to all needs and fitness levels.
