and heritage tourism category at the 2009 Western
Australian Tourism Awards. Kids over four can take
part in the morning or afternoon cruises, passing
beautiful scenery from the forest to the coast.
When it comes to family holidays, kids and
animals make a magical combination. Pemberton
Breakaway Cottages has an abundance of chicken,
sheep and wildlife, along with playground
equipment and country-style accommodation for
groups of up to seven people. Situated 5km from
Pemberton, it is also an ideal location from which
to explore the region.
In recent years a number of world-class wineries
have risen from the fertile soil of the Southern
Forest region. Salitage Wines is arguably the finest
and was recently awarded a five-star rating in the
James Halliday Wine Companion for 2010. The
impressive cellar door overlooking the winery
is open daily from 10 - 4pm, and a free guided
tour of the property runs daily at 11am. Luxury
accommodation can also be found on site, with self-
contained suites made from stunning local timber
overlooking the Salitage valley and state forest.
On the other side of town, Silkwood Wines has
a picturesque lakeside cellar door where gourmet
platters are available to complement tastings. The
winery is open on weekends between 10 - 4pm.
Hidden River Estate is located just five minutes
from Pemberton and specialises in handcrafted
boutique wines. The pretty cellar door with views
over the river and forest is open for tastings daily
from 9 - 4pm. Pemberton Wine Centre offers a
selection of the region's best wines -- along with a
display of local artwork -- and is open for tastings
daily between 12 -5pm.
Boutique brewery Jarrah Jacks is also worth a
visit, producing hand brewed beers made from fine
natural ingredients. This is a great place to take
kids, with playground equipment and a fun indoor
area providing hours of amusement.
In Manjimup, Fonty's Pool and Truffle Hill
Wines both scooped five-star ratings in the James
Halliday Wine Companion for 2010. The cellar
door at Fonty's Pool is set among sweeping karri
trees and is open daily from 12 - 4pm.
Five minutes away from the town centre,
Truffle Hill Wines has a beautiful cellar door
overlooking the vines and pristine water, which is
open daily from 10 -- 4.30pm.
FOODS OF THE FOREST
Soak up a morning of tastings with some of the
local gourmet treats on offer. Bannister Downs
Dairy is an outstanding family-run establishment
in Northcliffe that has been inundated with
awards recently, including gold for their
Chocolatte drink at this year's WA Dairy Industry
Awards. Take in the tranquil farm environment
from the deck of the Dairy Lounge Cafe, where
you can enjoy coffee, milkshakes, homemade
apple pie and fresh scones with the freshest of
country cream. The dairy is open Thursday to
Monday from 10 - 3pm.
