publisher’s note Welcome
Scoop Publishing magazines are printed using vegetable based inks on
paper that is chlorine free and manufactured from pulp sourced from
plantation grown timber. Both paper manufacturer, Sappi, and printer,
Scott Print, are certified the highest internationally recognised standard for
Enjoying the skiing in northern Japan.
The toughest thing about producing a travel magazine for WA is not what to include,
but having enough space to include it all – 288 pages doesn’t touch the surface.
Our mission remains to produce a definitive guide to the very best of each region in
WA. Our focus is no longer on travel options for the year, but instead focuses on the
coming season – in this case, July to December 2010.
What we can’t fit in, we reproduce online at scoop.com.au . We are working with
literally hundreds of local experts, tour operators, industry leaders and guide-book
authors to uncover the very best of each region. This is on top of the existing guides to
food and wine, tours and attractions, galleries and events. With more than 5000 pages
of content and 3000 full-page profiles already created, we are off to a good start.
In this edition, a review of the top 100 events reveals even more reasons to leave the
city – details for all events can be found online at scoop.com.au . Our regular itineraries
feature lists popular travel ideas for everyone from surfers in Margaret River to heli-
travellers in the North West, and will inspire you to move outside your comfort zone.
The main feature focuses on the natural attractions of the North West. This started
with a focus on statewide natural wonders until we realised we had no hope of fitting
them all in – the number of little-known national parks and natural wonders is truly
awesome and this is the season to see them.
The regional guides reflect local and expert opinions on top walking trails,
little-known fishing and surfing spots, local produce, national parks and – with the
help of detailed on-the-ground guide maps – much, much more...
If you are heading overseas, Japan and Brunei are two really fun and kooky travel
destinations. Only a 5.5-hour direct flight away, it amazes me that more people haven’t
visited Brunei. For adventure, there is the pristine jungle, rainforests, national parks and
the hilarious-looking proboscis monkey. For luxury, the heavily subsidised Empire Hotel
is consistently rated one of the best in the world. However, the real reason to visit is
cultural – take a step back in time to see how a benevolent Muslim-based absolute
monarchy can produce a society so safe that the main police station has a nine-hole
golf course attached to help fill in their day.
As for Japan, apart from offering the world’s best powder skiing, it is an awesome
travel destination and truly an experience of a lifetime – I am yet to meet anyone who
hasn’t fallen in love with the country, the skiing and the people from Northern Japan.
From all of us at Scoop Publishing, we wish you a fun and safe travel season ahead.
