THREE-DAY ESCAPE Day One Explore and enjoy the
Empire Retreat & Country Club; day two head to the water
village, trip along the Brunei River to look for the proboscis
monkey and visit Gadong Night Market; day three visit the
Royal Regalia Museum, Brunei Museum and the two main
mosques. Check out the two main malls and just wander.
ALTERNATIVELY Head to Ulu Temburong National Park
on day one, then do days two and three as above. You could
even spend two days in the national park. (See At a Glance
for accommodation options.)
SIX-DAY ESCAPE Stay in Brunei for two days, then
head to Sabah for four days.
STOP-OVER Use Brunei as a stopover to or from Singapore
or Kuala Lumpur. Royal Brunei also flies to Heathrow via
Dubai. Prices are very competitive and children under 17 fly
at children’s prices, which could add up to substantial savings.
OUR RECOMMENDATION? Use Sunshine Borneo
Tours to drive you around. Highly professional, it provides
a fascinating insight into the local culture and, importantly,
there’s no stress involved. Ask for Tom.
on the prayer mats. The magnificent Jame’Asr
Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was built by the
current ruler, the 29th Sultan. It’s awe-inspiring
with Swarovski chandeliers, intricate marble
work and a collection of rare Qurans. Similarly,
the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, built
in the 1950s by the Sultan’s father is one of the
most photographed structures in Brunei.
Brunei is extremely green, the Sultanate
using its vast resources to protect its forests
rather than exploit them. Unlike their Malaysian
and Indonesian neighbours, the Bruneians have
destroyed none of their forests and take good
care of their extensive flora and fauna. Take a
long boat along the mangrove-lined river to the
nearby Ulu Temburong National Park. Although
a popular day trip, it is best to spend at least one
night in the national park and to wake up to see
the gibbons foraging at dawn. This is an amazing
chance to see one of the world’s most diverse
eco systems, swim in natural pools, experience
an awesome canopy walk and enjoy unspoilt
rainforest in comfort and complete safety.
The area is almost free from tropical diseases:
malaria has been eradicated since the 1970s
and there is no need for yellow fever, typhoid
or cholera shots. There is no threat of political
violence and the climate is predictable and safe.
