Got nothing to do on your next long
weekend? Well, Bunbury’s got the
answer. Head on down Forrest
Highway on a Friday afternoon,
drive right the way through the
town and pull up in time to watch
the sun set on Back Beach. Once the
last rays have vanished, turn back
into town to pick up some takeaway.
There’s Japanese, Chinese, Thai,
Indian, Italian, pretty much
whatever takes your fancy. Team
the food with a great bottle of wine
and settle down for a relaxing night
in. Get up early on Saturday and
head out for a walk around Marlston
Hill, which you can then finish off
with breakfast on the waterfront.
Once you’ve eaten, it’s back to the
car, and a drive down to the Dolphin
Discovery Centre. Take an
interactive tour, and if the sun’s out,
why not enjoy an afternoon at
Koombana Bay? You can spend the
late afternoon taking in a movie at
the cinemas, or perhaps visit an art
gallery or two, before finishing the
day with dinner on Victoria Street.
That leaves Sunday free for your trip
out through the Geographe. Make
sure to stop and sample some wine
and fresh produce – maybe even get
on one of the walking trails in the
Collie River area. Pick up some
produce from Ferguson Valley, then
stop in at the Harvey Visitors Centre
where you can have afternoon tea
overlooking the beautiful gardens,
before making your way home via
South West Highway.
Whether you’re spending a week in Bunbury or
you’re just down for a long weekend, be sure to
check out the great food. Local favourite Taffy’s
is always worth a look... and a taste!
ITINERARY IDEAS | Weekend escape
ITINERARY IDEAS | Week away
Set aside a week for Bunbury if you
really want to make the most of it,
using your accommodation in town as
a base for trips through the Geographe
region. On the weekend, enjoy
Bunbury town: dining in, visiting the
art gallery, if it’s hot take a dive to see
the Lena Ship Wreck. Go out to Big
Swamp and see the animals, have an
afternoon at the Marlston Waterfront’s
boutiques, cafes, and Jetty Baths, or
pick up some treats from Taffy’s (a
family favourite). Set aside entire days
for trips to Donnybrook (enjoying
orchards, The Fun Park, wineries and
cider factory), Ferguson Valley (farm
produce, wineries), Harvey (historic
Stirling Cottage) and Collie River
Valley (bike trips, wineries, nature
walks, water sports and fishing).
TIP Book a farm stay overnighter
to break up the experience.
