It’s a hotspot for the State’s top cyclists, and a must for
anyone with wheels – here’s why all roads lead to Collie.
Home to some of the most trying, diverse and visually stunning cycling
tracks in the State, Collie is only a 2.5hr (200km) trip from Perth. But,
don’t be scared off by this cycling hotspot, it’s got something for the
novice to the fully-fledged riding machine, and even the competitor.
WORLD CLASS – PERTH TO NANNUP Munda Biddi is fast gaining a
reputation as a world-class, off-road cycling experience. The Munda Biddi
Trail (which means ‘path through the forest’ in the Noongar Aboriginal
language) stretches from Perth to Nannup, with a track into Collie that is
perfect for the casual nature-seeking cyclist. There are camp huts along
the path every 40km, with one north of Collie (Yarri hut) and one just
south (Nglang Boodja) in the Wellington National Park. Enjoy eucalyptus
forests and ancient, unspoiled bushland.
LONG-DISTANCE EVENT The Collie to Donnybrook & Return Cycling
Race is a gruelling event that’s held on the third Saturday in August each
year, with a 104km course that runs from Collie through the countryside
to Donnybrook and back via Mumballup. Established in 1925, it’s one
of WA’s longest-running, long-distance cycle events, sure to draw the
crowds from across the Geographe Wine Region and further afield.
STATE’S TOUGHEST – MT LENNARD Okay, calves of steel: prepare to
be tested. The Grizzly Trail on Mt Lennard is one of the toughest cycle
paths around, with obstacles and technical mountain bike features
that even the brave should fear. If you’re not up for the challenge, the
mountain contains several other paths (40km in total), which span
difficulty levels for all riders. Weaving through the mature jarrah forest
and granite outcrops, the tracks provide some spectacular views of the
lower Collie River valley.
FAMILY FRIENDLY – COLLIE The Collie-Darkan Rail Trail starts
20km east of Collie and finishes 46km east in Darkan, with views of the
open-cut mine at Buckingham, and wildflower fields in spring. Made
mostly of old rail formations, it has a gravel surface and four timber-decked
bridges ideal for cyclists, walkers and horse-riders. A get-back-to-country
ride, which is ideal for families and couples wanting a cruisey afternoon.
CHALLENGING LOOP – COLLIE Sika Circuit is one of the State’s most
testing trails. Near Collie, it is a nine-kilometre loop that comes off the
Munda Biddi Trail near the Wellington Dam. It starts near Potters Gorge
picnic and campsite, then heads north along the ridge with great views
across the lower Collie Valley. Take in the splendour of the dam and the
beauty of the lush undergrowth via hill climbs... and descents that are not
for the faint-hearted.
