ScEnIc DRIVE LOOPS
| garden festival lowdown
Peta Townsing, chairperson of the Festival of Country Gardens
organising committee, gives us the dirt on what to expect.
What does the festival involve? It’s a chance to see gardens that aren’t
ordinarily open. We publish a program of descriptions of the gardens and
how to find them, and the entry fee usually includes a cup of coffee and
cake. It runs through Balingup, Bridgetown, Nannup, Boyup Brook and
Manjimup. Some of the gardens are halfway between those towns.
What can we see? Fruit-growing began here 150 years ago, so in gardens
you get the ornamental versions like crabapples, bradford pears,
ornamental peaches, rhododendrons and camellias. Roses also do well.
You often find them blossoming in deserted old homesteads and farms.
What’s open? Everything from the cottage to the grand gardens! One
lady has extended her garden out into a paddock – it’s a huge landscaped
garden filled with tea roses, long hedges and deciduous trees. It’s dramatic!
As to wildflowers - any tips? From August to October east of Bridgetown,
off Winnejup Road, you’ll find orchids, wattle, kangaroo paw, Swan River
daisy, pink myrtle and pea flowers. You might not get heaps of them, but
if you keep your eyes open they start to appear everywhere.
Festival of Country Gardens: prelude, October 8-10; main festival, November
3-7, $3-$6, www.countrygardens.com .au .
73km return | Bridgetown
– Jarrah Park – Donnelly River
From Bridgetown, go over the
Blackwood River Bridge and turn
right at Brockman Highway.
After 20km, turn right into the
Jarrah Park. Stop for two great
walking tracks that wind through
jarrah, marri and karri trees.
After the walk, cook lunch on
a barbecue in the parking area.
Back out on Brockman Highway,
drive a kilometre west and turn
left onto Sears Road to reach the
Donnelly River. This area of the
river is a haven for wild kangaroos,
emus and parrots. Head back via
113km return | Bridgetown
– Balingup – Nannup
Recognised as one of the State’s
premier tourist drives, this takes
in a feast of countryside. From
Bridgetown, head north-west
along the South Western Highway
to Balingup and sample the
boutique shops and a few award-
winning wineries. Then take the
Balingup-Nannup Road south-
west to Nannup. There are beautiful
picnic spots along this stretch, so
take a packed lunch and a thermos.
Once in town, enjoy afternoon
tea and a wander past the quaint
heritage buildings and shops. Head
back via the Brockman Highway.
