Margaret River North insider
The old railway line that used
run through the Margaret River
Wine Region is being converted to
mountain bike and walking trails.
The section between Cowaramup
and Witcliffe, which runs through
Margaret River, is now complete
and ready to ride.
One special cow will hold court
at Cowaramup in 2010.
If you missed this region’s
celebrated Cow Parade, you don’t
have to worry. The Cow Parade
auction is to be held on July 10 at
Signal Park, Busselton. Viewing
starts at 3pm, with the auction
at 4.30pm. You’ll need a ticket to
attend – call the Margaret River
Visitor Centre. However, if it’s
too late for you to make the trip
down, there’s one crazy cow that
will be sticking around: Free as a
Cow by Ron Roozen (sponsored by
the Augusta Margaret River Shire
Council) will take over a patch of
grass at Pioneer Park, Cowaramup.
Where did the name come from?
It’s a tongue-in-cheek reference
to another local icon – the Free as a
Bird sculpture at Laurance Wines.
Orchids, wildflowers and more...
the area of Margaret River is a
hotspot for flora.
With more than 150 orchid
species and 2500 wildflower
species in the Margaret River
area, the spring months
of September and October
produce a vibrant display
you won’t want to miss. In
fact, the region is one of only
34 recognised biodiversity
hotspots in the world. The good
news is that you can walk,
cycle or drive to take it all in,
so there’s really no excuse not
to see it. Discover cottonheads,
purple tassles, fan-flowers
and flame peas. Or, if you’re a
lover of the beautiful orchid,
keep an eye out for king in his
carriage, flying ducks, cowslip,
donkey’s and spider orchids.
Recommended viewing areas
include the Rails to Trails
Walk and the Bike Trail to
Cowaramup, sections of the
Cape to Cape Track (Contos
Cliffs, north of Gracetown),
Gracetown Road and Abbeys
Farm Road. A map is available
from the Margaret River
or Augusta visitor centres.
