insider Margaret River North
TOP FiVE SURFiNG SPOTS
If you’re co-ordinated enough to stand on a surfboard, then you
should definitely sample the waves near Margaret River. Here are
some of the best you’ll find around the area.
NORTH POINT Located, you guessed it, just north of Cowaramup. Apparently
this is the place where the locals like to flaunt their skills. it’s not uncommon for the
waves here to form two barrels – presumably creating twice the fun.
LEFTHANDERS A perfect reef break attracts hoards of surfers to this spot, so
you best get there early on weekends. Waves here are renowned for their consistency,
delivering long barrels and clean walls where you can show off your fancy moves.
SOUTH POINT The nemesis of North Point, for obvious reasons. Waves here
are renowned for being clean and protected from the South West sea breeze. Steep
at take-off with fast hollow sections through the middle, this spot is perfect for fans
of the so-called ‘cutback’ manoeuvre.
HUZZAWOOEE Get your grommet on! Positioned just next to South Point,
this is the spot for would-be surfers and talented young tykes. The reef break is
relatively gentle and just a short paddle from shore.
COBBLESTONES ‘Cobblestones’ is a nicer word than ‘rocks’, but the
meaning is essentially the same. So, don’t head to this spot unless it’s at medium to
high tide, or you may end up with an egg on your noggin (or worse). in the right
conditions though, hollow tubes peeling right make this a popular break.
