PoINT oF INTEREST The mighty Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean are
said to meet at Cape Leeuwin and the lines of swell often coming out from
the coast certainly make you believe that this is where the waters crash
together. However, while Australian authorities regard the Southern Ocean
as being all the water south of Australia, there is an ongoing dispute about
the Southern Ocean’s northern borders, which many believe are at 60°S –
way, way further down from Leeuwin and a long, long way from any land.

Top spots to beat the gales and
reel in a catch, from beach,
boat, bank or rock.
With such a long stretch of
coastline at your disposal, you
just know there has got to be a
fish out there for you. Sea and
shore fishing is widely available as
is excellent game angling. Good
river fishing is always available
on the beautiful Blackwood River,
too. Steve Cummings, from Down
South Camping & Outdoors, says
even when the south-westerly
is billowing, you can still tuck
yourself in behind Cape Leeuwin;
or if the wind is coming from
the west, you will find shelter on
Hardie Inlet. He shares his other
Beach and boat | Hamelin Bay
Take your rod to the beach to
catch salmon, tailor, herring and
skippy right off the beach. They’re
plentiful here thanks to the reef
system just out of the bay. Steve
says if you’re after salmon, mulies
and lures are your best bait. From
a boat, you’re in with a chance
to catch pink snapper and the
delicious dhufish, found only in
WA. Squid, octopus and mulies
are your best bet for bait for these
reef types. TIP The best time for
salmon here is from October to
the end of June.
Rock | Skippy Rock This is near
Augusta, just north of Cape
Leeuwin. There’s a good reef
system here and, as the name
suggests, the skippy are plentiful.
Herring and squid are also
plentiful. Steve says skippy and
herring will love whitebait and,
for squid, use a squid jig – an
artificial lure. TIP Rock fishing
can be dangerous, so keep an eye
on the swell and conditions, and
don’t fish here if the swell is big.
Boat or bank | Blackwood River
Fish from the riverbank or by
kayak for black bream – Molloy
Island is a great spot to try, Steve
says. Towards Augusta near the
rivermouth, as the water becomes
saltier, you’ll catch herring,
whiting and tailor.
TIP Prawns or soft lures are the
best bait in the estuary waters
up towards Molloy Island.
