CLEAN AND GREEN
Visitors to Albany will soon be able to see more wind turbines.
The six-turbine Grasmere Wind Farm, a $40-million Verve Energy
project, will be installed at one end of the successful Albany Wind
Farm to form a new, bigger wind farm. It will meet 80 per cent of
Albany’s electricity needs with clean, renewable energy, reducing
greenhouse gas emissions by 43,500 tonnes per year – equivalent
to taking 10,000 cars off the road. The turbines are due to arrive in
October 2011 and the project will be completed by early 2012.
Qantas is set to give Skywest a
run for its money on the Perth to
Exmouth route, according to media
reports. Deregulation of the Perth
to Geraldton route is also likely to
see airlines jostling for business.
Qantas also has a new Port Hedland
to Melbourne route. The move adds
to the list of Qantas flights for
business and leisure travellers direct
to the North West from the Eastern
States. The Karratha to Brisbane
service has also been doubled to
two flights a week, and the Perth
to Paraburdoo route will run three
more times a week. The changes
follow increased demand from the
mining and energy sectors.

JEWEL IN THE CROWN
WA’s stunning Jewel Cave was set to reopen as Scoop Traveller went to print.
The cave, 12km north of Augusta, was closed for three months for works to
ensure the preservation of this world-renowned and fragile natural attraction.
Old infrastructure was removed to enable natural filtration of water and the
protection of threatened species that live in the cave. There’s a new entrance,
walkway, lighting and Interpretative Centre with cafe. The new design blends
into the forest environment. Visit margaretriver.com for details.
