Hawaii and WA: they’re both windsurf-speak for ‘dream destinations’.
That’s why the likes of world number two Bjorn Dunkerbeck, considered
the ‘Tiger Woods of windsurfing’, make the trip from Europe to compete
in the Lancelin Ocean Classic (January 6-9, lancelinoceanclassic.com .au).
There are about 300 competitors, but in the region of 4000 spectators turn
out to watch the action from the shore.
For every windsurfer who is inspired onto the water by such a class
international event, there’s a good breeze waiting. Early in the summer,
Lancelin and other points north are firing. Come February and March,
Margaret River and Esperance take over the windsurfing kudos. The long
season is one of the reasons WA is so appealing to windsurfers, says Lancelin
Ocean Classic organiser Rob Goyen. And then there’s the adrenaline factor.
“Margaret River is known for its fear factor,” says Rob. “It’s a hardcore
place. International visitors often spend a few weeks in Lancelin and then
head down to Margaret River for a week to see what they can do.”
ROB’S GO-TO WINDSURFING DESTINATIONS
Margaret River – Surfers Point
Esperance – Fourth Beach
Lancelin – Windsurfer’s Beach
Perth – Leighton Beach and Dutch Inn (near Cottesloe)
Swan River – Majestic Point in Melville, and downstream
near Pelican Point
Windsurfers take part in the
Lancelin Ocean Classic.
“THAT’S THE BEST
HOLIDAY I HAVE
Adventure destinations include Ningaloo and the Monte Bello Islands, the Kimberley, the Rowley Shoals, West Papua, Papua New Guinea, the
Louisiade Archipelago, the Solomon Islands, Sydney and the Hawkesbury River and, Kangaroo Island and the Eyre Peninsular.
An adventure on the True North is one of Australia’s most revered tourism
experiences. All cruises include frequent daily excursions and feature the
True North’s unequalled style, modern cuisine and an Australian crew.
Multiple expedition boats (not zodiacs) encounter wilderness in small
groups and to add yet another dimension to adventure, most cruise
options feature an onboard helicopter. Discover for yourself why our
guests consistently remark “that’s the best holiday I have ever had!”
