Perth to Geraldton | Perth is our favorite Australian city. Its great lifestyle,
beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect stop-over
for families. We found a flat in the heart of Subiaco (one of our favorite
suburbs with its village-like and yet trendy flair). Kings Park with its
unique playgrounds and family friendly cafes was amazing. Later we
stayed in a flat in Cottesloe and really felt on holiday. Every morning, after
a short stroll down to the beach, we had breakfast in a local cafe. Another
highlight in Perth was browsing in Fremantle; we loved the galleries, arts
and craft shops, the Fremantle markets and the Little Creatures brewery
(which has a great outdoor sand pit for kids). Other highlights for the
kids: the Perth Mint (don’t miss the Gold Pour), the Fremantle Shipwreck
Galleries, Perth Zoo and AQWA at Hillarys Boat Harbour.
We spent four nights on Rottnest. The island is, of course, fantastic, which
unfortunately doesn’t apply to the accommodation. Our food favourites were
the Juice Nest (inside the Rottnest Island General Store), the gourmet and
organic menu at Quokka Joe’s, and Hotel Rottnest’s great outdoor pub.
We decided to stay two weeks in Geraldton, mainly to catch up with
family and friends. At first sight, the town is not that appealing, but you
quickly realize that Geraldton is undergoing some serious changes: new
bars and restaurants are opening and many newcomers are settling down.
We loved the fantastic sand dunes south of town (only reachable by 4WD),
the playground and water park located in the heart of town next to the
kids-friendly town beach (have an ice-cream at Skeetas Restaurant),
watching the kite- and windsurfers at Sunset Beach, Back Beach and Point
Moore, strolling around the new marina, the new trendy Sundowners
Restaurant, and live music at the Freemasons Hotel.
We also enjoyed five weeks in New Zealand. It is so far away for
Europeans (12 hours’ time difference) but we knew this was our only
chance to discover the Maori kingdom. We drove around both islands and
had an extraordinary experience, but were glad to get back to Perth.
These five months helped us bond and become an even more united family.
We enjoyed every moment away from the daily stresses. For children that
age, being with their parents is the only thing that matters. Six months
later they still talk about our trip and remember every highlight.
We found Australia very family friendly and a fabulous country in every
respect: the climate, the people, the great outdoors, the friendly smiles.
What a contrast to the grim faces on our flight back from London to Geneva.
Looking back we think that three months would have been enough: the
famous trial period to evaluate a new staff member or a new president is a
time frame that is long enough to take a real break! You only live once...
