really must do one or more of the tours. The skindiving is as good as the
scuba and the reef is largely recovered from the coral bleaching that had
occurred about 10 years ago. Plenty of fish, overhangs, turtles and coral
can be experienced in near-perfect diving conditions.
The food, as at every other Club Med, is superb; expansive buffets
with endless options of local and international cuisine.
As for the rooms, the Club Med traditional focus is on getting you out
enjoying the resort and extraordinary surrounds, so the standard rooms
are comfortable but basic, with a few luxurious beachside alternatives.
The real Fantasy Island holiday starts at the lagoon suites.
Club Med has evolved over 60 years, and as their loyal customers
have grown older and more affluent, the quality of accommodation and
premium services has changed to meet their needs. At Club Med, luxury
is measured in ‘tridents’, and Kani is rated as a four-trident resort, which
until recently, was a good as it gets.
What’s new is the introduction, at select resorts, including Kani, of a
luxury five-trident space, where premium accommodation is enhanced by
extra services and facilities. At Kani, the five-trident space is based around
the 75 over-the-water lagoon suites. Waking up in one of these suites, the
first thing you notice is the lack of noise – perhaps the sound of the ocean
current passing under the floor or the gentle breeze flowing through the
open window, but otherwise there’s nothing but serenity.
If you can drag yourself away from the luxurious king-sized bed, take
the steps down from your private balcony into the warm waters for an
early-morning swim. If you need anything, simply call the concierge
service. If you don’t feel like buffet, take breakfast in your room or a snack
at the Manta Lounge, located at the nexus of the elevated timber walkways
and reserved exclusively for lagoon-suite guests. The lounge is a lovely
place to spend time, with WiFi and a 360-degree view of the lagoon. The
built-in catamaran nettings are ideal for an evening G&T, or enjoying a
glass of champagne in air-conditioned comfort.
The lagoon suites are set up for maximum privacy, but for me, one of
the real joys of Kani is the relaxed social environment, making for easy
conversation with guests from Europe, Africa and Asia. It’s up to you.
Getting there is easy. As at December 2010, Singapore Airlines offered
flights leaving Saturday at 2pm and arriving in the Maldives the same
evening at 10.10pm – ready for your first G&T in the Manta Lounge at 11!
Alternatively, Club Med offers packages, including flights, at clubmed.
com.au, or call 1300 855 052. Depending upon the season, packages
offering up to 40 per cent off are available, so enquire before deciding it is
too expensive, and take into consideration that once you book, you don’t
have to spend another cent. Sounds better than a week at work!
