As Perth grows, the character
and atmosphere of its
entertainment and shopping
precincts grows ever more diverse.
If you’re a creature of habit and
rarely travel outside your comfort
zone, here are some suggestions.
The George Street precinct and
Plympton Ward form the heart
of downtown East Freo. A grid
of narrow streets is made up of
renovated 19th-century workers’
cottages and warehouses. The
central corridor of George Street
has evolved into a strip of cafes,
galleries, retailers and a fine wine
store noted for stylish individuality.
The area’s eclectic residential
community enjoys a quiet, almost
country atmosphere moments away
from Canning Highway, and is a
short walk to the river, where there
are views to the port.
The cafe/commercial strip here
seems quiet considering its position
alongside busy Scarborough
Beach Road. Then again, most
great cappuccino alleys have
traffic flowing freely while those
on the footpath take no notice
think Fremantle and St Kilda.
Mount Hawthorn has become
home to young professionals
who have snapped up renovated
bungalows and new townhouses.
The businesses reflect the hip
population: coffee houses, fashion
and accessory boutiques, florists,
wine bars, restaurants, and the
popular Paddington Ale House.
In Leederville, retro rules and
Oxford Street is king. Home to the
Luna Cinema and the revitalised
Oxford Hotel, the street also houses
louche cafes and restaurants, bars,
gift stores and boutiques. Just off
Oxford Street is the legendary
Leederville Hotel, and the Hip-E
Club, a psychedelic relic of Perth’s
nightclub scene. Lake Monger and
its verdant lawns and trees provide
a welcome respite from the noise
and action of city life.
A short ferry ride from Barrack
Square places you in South Perth.
Mends Street is littered with cafes
and brasseries and Angelo Street
is a slice of Italy with European
grocers and butchers sitting beside
fashion boutiques, florists and
old-fashioned milk bars.
The beauty of Angove Street is in its
grimy charm. Faded brick walls are
festooned with 1950s advertising
A favourite daytrip destination for those in the know, Yanchep is
one of Australia’s great national parks, situated right on the city’s
doorstep. Less than an hour’s drive from Perth and ten minutes
inland from the northern beaches, the park’s attractions include a
scenic lake, limestone caves, bush trails, koala-viewing platform, an
extensive population of native fauna, and tours that offer insights into
Indigenous culture. There are cafes, accommodation, picnic grounds
and a picturesque golf course. Visit dec.wa .gov.au/yanchep for details.
YANCHEP NATIONAL PARK
slogans now barely discernable,
and tattered posters of rock bands
long gone. The shopfronts are
uniformly tatty, making them
uniformly natty. Inside, there are
coffee houses, boutiques, gift stores
and a music emporium. Restaurants
include Italian, Mexican, Asian and
Greek. There’s a bookshop, textile
and design store, and a swimwear
outlet. A couple of great pubs
complete the picture. It’s inner-
urban hip – think Fitzroy or St
Kilda. Better, think North Perth.
