frogs, tiger snakes and more than
100 species of birds. A designated
walkway surrounds the fragile
habitat. Garden Island houses the
HMAS Stirling Naval Base.
Two-thirds of the island is open
to the public and is accessed
by private vessel only. A native
wallaby species, the tammar, calls
the island home. Strict regulations
include prohibition on littering,
camping and open fires, and visitors
must leave the island by nightfall.
Ten wrecks are scattered
throughout the marine parks,
making for interesting dives.
Four ships and two airplane
wrecks are within reach on the
Bell Park Wreck Trail, the most
accessible and user-friendly site
located directly off-shore from
Rockingham Beach. Other diving
trails and sites, including the
Saxon Ranger wreck, are accessed
by boat and require greater levels
of expertise. They are subject to a
daily diving fee of $25.
