a dinghy to get over the Murchison
River to Frustrations.
Locals in Exmouth advise that
mangrove jacks bite in the creeks
during the summer months.
Bundegi Flats has species including
groper, coral trout, snapper and
emperor. Boat fishing is big from
January to June, when giant
trevally, queenies and the odd
barramundi move into the Exmouth
gulf. Bills Bay in Coral Bay is a
sanctuary zone but there are still
fishing options. Inside the reef,
anglers can catch spangled emperor,
sweetlip, charlie courts (a small
but tasty cod), trevally and squid.
Venture outside the reef to add
red emperors, pearl perch, rankin
cod, robinson seabream, baldchin
groper, coronation cod, mackerel
and big game fish like wahoo and
sailfish to the catch. Fishing charters
depart daily during the season.
Rock lobster season
Between November and June, the
waters from Cervantes to Geraldton
are filled with crayfishing boats
heading out for rock lobster. Tour
the lobster factory at Cervantes,
then have a bite to eat at the Lobster
Shack, right on top of the factory.
Around 10-12 days after the full
moon in March and April, divers
and snorkellers can marvel at the
mass coral spawning. The water
off Ningaloo turns cloudy and red
creating an unusual spectacle –
particularly at night, when it glows.
Ningaloo Reef is one of the few
places in the world to be visited by
whale sharks on a regular basis.
The annual coral spawn in March/
April heralds their arrival and they
usually stay until around July. With
many experienced tour operators,
your odds of getting up close to a
whale shark here are the best in
the world. Snorkel charters depart
daily from Exmouth and Coral Bay
during the season.
The Ningaloo coastline is an
important habitat for marine
turtles, including loggerhead and
green turtles. Between December
and January, the females crawl
up onto their chosen beach at
night to dig a nest in the soft sand.
About eight weeks later, tiny
hatchlings scramble out of the nest.
From mid-January to late March
visitors can participate in a guided
experience at night at the Jurabi
Turtle Centre. Enthusiasts can join
the turtle trackers on the Ningaloo
coastline. Go to dec.wa .gov.au
Skeleton Beach in Coral Bay is a
reef shark nursery. Large numbers
of black tip reef sharks inhabit
the shallows from September to
February. White tip and grey reef
sharks have also been sighted.
Whale sharks can be observed at Coral Bay.
Shore fishing is one option
for Coral Coast anglers.
Turtles are among the wonderful
sea-life to be found in the area.
