Originally from Perth, Liz fell in love with this ‘town without traffic
lights’ in 1999. For five years she specialised in art tours, and is an expert
on what to see and do in Broome.

FUN FOR FREE
All year round, the heart of Broome is an intoxicating fusion of east
meets west. Wander through Chinatown, once a bustling hub of
pearl sheds, gambling houses, opium dens and brothels. Today, pearl
showrooms, retail outlets, art galleries and sidewalk cafes make for a
great shopping precinct. You may also get a close up of a Boeing 373
underbelly, as it comes into land at the airport.
Johnny Chi Lane
A little pedestrian open-air mall with a variety of different shops. On
the walls of the shops there are descriptions and stories of Broome’s
early days, starting at the Carnarvon Street end. It’s a great way to learn
about the town’s history.
Broome Courthouse Markets
Ask anybody in Broome where they’re headed on Saturday morning
and the answer is invariably the same: down to the Courthouse Markets.
Every Saturday (and Sunday, in the peak season) the grounds of the
Courthouse see law and order activities put to one side to become the
setting for vibrant local markets. Sample the wide range of local products
and be entertained by music and performance.
Pearls are one of the big retail draws
to the area (above), as is local art
(right). BELOW Streeters Jetty at high tide.
