Jackie Barton is head of the Geographe Wine Association and co-owner, along
with partner Adrian Jones, of Barton Jones Wines. The couple migrated
to Western Australia from the United Kingdom in 1997, and by 2000 had
followed their dream of setting up a rural vineyard in Donnybrook. A former
international volleyball player, Jackie gives us her five top tips for things to do
in Geographe in the first half of the year.
• Cycle the Munda Biddi track from Donnybrook to Nannup.
• Go to Peppermint Grove Beach near Capel. It’s a great family beach
with good facilities.
• Walk the river trail from Donnybrook along the Preston River, following
the old railway line. It’s a nice shady walk in the summer.
• Walk the local section of the Bibbulmun track.
• Buy some marron. Check out the roadside marron vendors on the South
West Highway, heading out of Donnybrook for about 4km south. Grill
or boil the marron, and serve simply with lemon and garlic. A wooded
semillon or semillon sauvignon blanc is a great accompaniment.
