Heather Gee has lived in Esperance for more than 40 years. She and her
husband Stephen own the award-winning Esperance B&B by the Sea. Here
is Heather’s selection of the best summer activities to try in the region.
Woody Island | One of my favourite trips is a nature cruise around the
105 islands of the Recherche Archipelago. Woody Island is the only
one open for tourism, and grabbing a few days to camp on the island
is a magical eco-tourism experience. Most of my days there are spent
snorkelling in the crystal clear aquamarine water, admiring the superb
brightly coloured coral under the jetty.
Great Ocean Way | Around every corner and over every hill is yet
another breathtaking view of the shimmering aquamarine water,
edged with white beaches. The spectacular granite headlands add to the
palette of unbelievable colours. Southern Right whales can also be seen
here between May and October.
Lake Monjingup | Not only does it have ancient vegetation and magnificent
wildflowers, it is a bird-lover’s paradise. The boardwalk that winds
through the picturesque paperbark wetlands entices me to capture the
Tanker Jetty | You can have a chat to Sammy the sea lion – a well-known
large resident who requests breakfast, lunch and tea from successful
fishermen – and enjoy a coffee while admiring the panoramic island view.
