The windsurfing season kicks off in October, with coastal
towns from Gnaraloo to Margaret River coming alive for wave-
jumping fanatics from around the world. The season culminates
in the annual Lancelin Ocean Classic event in January
Yukari Newman has been windsurfing for 11 years.
She learnt to wavesail off the rugged northwest
coast of Tassie. In 2006, Yukari moved to WA
to play in the Fremantle Doctor. She has won
wavesailing competitions around Australia and
calls Scarborough her local. Yukari’s favourite
spots to sail in Western Australia are...
Gnaraloo | The best wavesailing spot in WA.
Optimal time to go is September and October.
It’s 4WD access to Tombstones, but being
out there with whales breaching makes this
a special location.
Coronation Beach (Geraldton) | One of
the windiest places in WA, with excellent
conditions for big jumps. Typically the
seabreeze builds from late morning till it is
howling by early afternoon. It’s also a good
spot for all levels of experience.
Lancelin | Drive up and back from Perth in a
day and get down-the-line wave sailing. When
South Passage is too big, head to Main Break,
which has a grassed area for rigging with
outdoor showers and barbecue facilities. Gear
is available for hire right on the beach!
Scarborough | Yukari’s favourite spot to sail
in Perth. Experienced locals are inspiring here.
Catch them landing backloops and pulling
off wave 360s, but beware of the shore break
and strong current.
Safety Bay | Very social atmosphere. Sail in
every wind direction, with exciting flat-water
speed sailing. There’s a huge rigging area – it’s
easy to launch your gear into the bay – but you
must use a weed fin.
When in WA, Swiss windsurfer Laure Treboux laps up
the wind and the waves training for competitions on
the world windsurfing circuit. A two-time winner of the
Lancelin Ocean Classic, she spends October to March
in Perth after lugging more than 80kg of equipment –
three boards and six sails – halfway around the world.
Favourite spots in Perth | Pelican Point and
Applecross are the best spots on the river.
Favourite spots outside Perth | Gnaraloo is
definitely my favourite for the waves, wind and for its
sheer remoteness. Others are Lancelin, Geraldton,
Esperance and Margaret River.
