aving travelled Asia for six months,
New Zealand for a year and the east
coast of Australia for three months,
I flew to Perth to explore the west
coast. When my friend Robbie and I hatched a
plan to drive to Broome and work on the pearl
boats earlier this year, we started hearing
about the Indian Ocean Drive.
Until late last year, we were told, the
only way to explore the stretch of coast just
north of Perth was to take the busy inland
road, the Brand Highway, and detour down
side roads to get to Lancelin, Cervantes,
Jurien and Green Head. Now there was a
coast-hugging road to get us there.
No-one we spoke to knew much about
the lobster-fishing towns along the way,
or what to expect. There wasn’t even a map
available yet. So we bought a 4WD, put an
ad on Gumtree and found two more travel
companions, Ben from France and Christie
from Hong Kong. The four of us set out in
March, and here’s what we found.
