Pack your golf clubs and play a
round at all the sand green golf
courses in the Avon Valley. Each
town has their own small course
and the cooler weather makes for
interesting play around the visiting
kangaroos and wildlife. Tennis
clubs in the area have courts for
public use, and in winter you can
watch country football matches
being played on town ovals. The
small town of Beverley is big
on sports, with tennis, bowls, a
motocross track and even a tractor
Throughout the communities of
the Avon Valley there are many
restored heritage buildings from
the Victorian and Federation
era. Tours are available from the
visitor centres in each town, but
just a stroll down the main streets
will reveal a living history. You
will need a car if you intend to go
museum hopping, and planning
is the key to seeing everything.
The larger museums are found in
York, Beverley and New Norcia.
Toodyay has Connor’s Mill and the
Newcastle Gaol Museum which
are also worth a visit. Brookton
and Goomalling have interesting
homesteads and trails open to
the public. With York being the
first inland settlement in Western
Australia, the small township
makes a popular destination
for history buffs. The three top
historic sites when visiting York
are the Residency Museum, the
Courthouse and the York Motor
Museum. The York Visitor’s Centre
can provide you with the York
Heritage Trail booklet which has
four self-guided walks.
The best time to visit Australia’s only monastic town is winter through to
spring. Summer is just too hot and the landscape looks brown and dry.
The two-hour drive from Perth will take you through countryside made
green by the winter rains, and during spring the wildflowers will be in
bloom. If you want to make the most of the history and ambience of New
Norcia make it an ‘add-on’ to your weekend stay in the Avon Valley, or
stay overnight in the Monastery Guesthouse or the New Norcia Hotel.
The public can wander through most of the township but the best advice
would be to join a guided tour because there is just so much learn. Make
sure you visit the art gallery – the artwork on display will surprise you.
