Both Coral Bay and Exmouth have plenty to offer for holidaymakers.
Here’s a quick guide to their best attractions.
Coral Bay is a tiny, idyllic beachside community smack bang on
Australia’s largest fringing reef. Walk in just metres from shore for
awesome snorkelling and diving. A relaxed destination where boardies
and a hat are de rigeur year-round. Popular for young families,
backpackers and campers, the best time to visit is April to October
(it’s extremely busy during school holidays).
Get there | A 12-hour drive from Perth on the Great Northern Highway,
Coral Bay is 150km from Exmouth on sealed road. Flights go from Perth
into Exmouth, then hire a car or take a coach transfer. Greyhound bus
services run out of Perth and there’s a light airstrip for charters.
Stay | Two resorts, a backpackers’, two caravan parks and about 20
short-term holiday houses are available – bookings in advance are
essential from April to October.
Eat | The local pub, restaurants, cafe, bakery and supermarket provide
the best food choices.
Play | There’s camping, fishing, diving, snorkelling, swimming, and
beachcombing to enjoy.
Facilities | Coral Bay has an internet cafe and a nursing post.
Exmouth is the main township on the north-west cape, enjoying
temperate weather all year round, awesome fishing and diving, and
marine and terrestrial national parks that attract visitors from all
across the globe. It’s the perfect getaway for camping, hiking, outdoor
adventure and watersport enthusiasts.
Get there | A 12-hour drive from Perth on the Great Northern Highway.
There are daily flights and a Greyhound bus service from Perth.
Stay | There are several resorts, hotels, a motel, caravan parks, short-
term holiday houses, B&Bs and farm-stay accommodation. Book ahead
from April to October.
Eat | Try the pubs, taverns, restaurants, fish and chip shop, cafe,
bakery and supermarket.
Play | Camping, 4WDing, fishing, diving, snorkelling and surfing
are among the options.
Facilities | Exmouth has a visitor centre, internet cafes, barbecue
facilities, banks, sporting facilities, movie theatre, airport, hospital
and vehicle service/repair.
GOOD TO KNOW
When to go | Coral Bay and Exmouth are flat out during winter
school holidays. Book well ahead and be prepared for crowds.
Launches | There are three boat-launching areas in Exmouth and one
in Coral Bay, plus smaller beach launches in some caravan parks.
To know when booking ahead | Bus transfers between Coral Bay
and Exmouth run regularly; caravan and camp trailers can be
hired; Coral Bay and Exmouth are pet friendly (although there are
no pets in the national park).

There’s no vehicle/caravan repair in Coral Bay | So head to Exmouth.
