Visit our region to meet the
people that grow the wine.
blackwood river valley GUIDE
The Valley’s mediterranean climate of warm dry summers and cold
wet winters, combined with its terroir of gravelly loam soils, are the
vital elements which produce the characteristic earthy undertones in
the region’s cabernet and shiraz, and the elegant fruit-driven flavours
of its white wines.
The first vines were planted in the area in 1976, and today there are
17 wine producers, many of whom have cellar doors, and all are willing
to spend time to share the stories behind their wines. Start by winding
your way from Nannup through the karri forests to Bridgetown where
fine food and wines are the keystone of the tourism trail. Stop in at the
Bridgetown Hotel to view most of the region’s wines in one place and
sample their great menu. Decide for yourself if Bridgetown really is
home to the State’s best steak sandwich!
Head east towards Boyup Brook, or north towards Greenbushes
and Balingup where you can choose from a variety of chalets, B&Bs or
homestays to ensure you have time to taste all the region has on offer.
Don’t forget to visit the very popular Cidery, located very close
to the Bridgetown main road and where they also serve some nice
country cooking. Discover the wonderful food and wine available at
the towns’ cafes, restaurants and old pubs, or pack yourself a picnic of
delicious local produce.
Call into any of the Visitor Centres for a guide to where to go to taste
the fruits of the valley.
