ike a lot of people, I have a list of things
to see before I die, and I’m doing my
best to get through it. I don’t know if I’ll
make the moon (space travel still seems
quite far off) and I’m starting to think that a stint
in Antarctica doesn’t hold the same appeal these
days. However, I was recently able to put another
line through my list when I visited China and
walked a section of the Great Wall.
Having finished a two-week family ski trip to
Japan, we decided to head home via Beijing.
Six days, while short, is enough to get a taste.
The city’s steeped in history with a wide range
of things to see and do. And it’s huge. Massive
shopping malls, 16-lane, 50m-wide roads, and
a lot of people simply moving around. We were
there just before Chinese New Year and read that
the country’s rail network was under pressure
to cope with the 250 million people expected to
travel during the festive period. Staggering.
The city is split into distinct areas, so it’s good
to have an idea of where you want to stay. If you
