There is a strong community within the city, with many young families
choosing to live here rather than fly in, fly out. As a result there are many
arts and sporting activities to choose from.
Shopping | The main precinct in Kalgoorlie itself is down Hannan
Street. This is where you will find the main retail stores including small
boutiques and gift shops, as well as the larger chain stores. Next door
in Boulder, Burt Street is the place to visit for a coffee or a trip back in
time in an old sweet shop. Many of the shops and buildings in the area
will still be in a state of restoration due to recent earthquake activity.
Red light district | Back in the day, authorities decided to group all
the brothels into one area, Hay Street. Today only three brothels from
the original 25 remain and tours can be joined to take in the history.
Patrons must be over 18 years of age and the tours are popular.
Eating out | A large number of eateries can be found along
Hannan Street, and dining on one of the balconies of the city’s
iconic hotels, while being entertained by passersby down below,
is a unique experience.
Super Pit | Watch the workings from the Super Pit Lookout, off
Goldfields Highway just minutes from the CBD. Be warned, this
lookout gets particularly windy during the day. To be present during
one of the many daily blasts, contact the visitor centre for times.
Tours leave from the Super Pit Shop on Burt Street in Boulder.
