FISHING AND CRABBING
Much of the state’s seafood comes out of the Shark Bay waters off
Carnarvon, so it’s no surprise that fishing looms large as a favourite
pastime in this region. Great fishing spots are in abundance for all skill
levels, including sunken wrecks and Bernier and Dorre islands for those
with a substantial boat or choosing to take a charter. From the beach at
Pelican Point, Mia Boolya and Dwyer’s Leap, to the One Mile Jetty or the
Small Boat Harbour, the choices are endless.
Charters | Testament to the quality and quantity of the seafood hauled
in from Shark Bay, charter boats book out quickly. Come autumn, this
is the best way for serious anglers to make a catch – especially since
locals jealously guard the whereabouts of their best fishing spots.
Jetty fishing | The One Mile Jetty is a popular family fishing spot. The
long walk to the end rewards with a deep channel, yielding bigger
fish like queenie, mackerel, tuna, cobia and mullet. Expect bream,
whiting, and flathead at the end of the Small Boat Harbour.
Beach fishing | Catch small fish at the river mouth, and bigger fry
like shark and trevally in the deeper parts of the channel at Pelican
Point. Town Beach has flathead, bream and whiting, and at Dwyers
Leap (best on an incoming tide) you can fish for mangrove jack,
bream, whiting and flathead. On the tidal mud flats of Bush Bay and
New Beach – also best on an incoming tide – expect whiting, cod,
mangrove jack, tailor, trevally, mullet and squid.
Crabbing | Blue swimmer crabs can be found around the foreshore and
the creeks of Carnarvon. Around One Mile Jetty is a good place to try,
or just out from the harbour heading south towards Bush Bay.
