Flying over Lake Argyle
(Photography Tourism WA).
Cathedral Gorge in Purnululu National
Park (Photography Simon McBeth).
You can fly, cruise, or drive the 35km on sealed roads from Kununurra all
year round. It is safe to swim in the lake near the boat ramp or pay to take
a dip in the infinity pool, which is on top of a cliff and appears to dive into
the inland sea. Visitors can launch a boat to fish and camp for free on the
islands, many disappearing underwater during the Wet. The lake is vast, so
life jackets and flares are essential. Watch out for crocodiles.
Watch the sunset from the Five Rivers Lookout where the Forest, Pentecost,
Durack, King and Ord rivers enter the Cambridge Gulf. See monster salties
at a crocodile farm or in the wild at Anthon’s Landing. There’s barra fishing
on King River Road just past the prison tree, beware of crocs. Leaving town
on the Great Northern Highway, stop at the Grotto, a waterhole with safe
swimming, at its best after the Wet when it’s gushing with water.
Purnululu National Park
The turn off to the banded domes
forming the Bungle Bungle Range
is about 250km from Kununurra or
108km from Halls Creek. It’s 4WD
only, where a 52km rough unsealed
road winds towards the rangers
station and information centre.
There are two basic campsites with
drop toilets and untreated water.
It’s not suitable for caravans. The
dirt track into Purnululu closes
mid-December and opens at the
start of April (weather permitting).
