50 GREAT IDEAS
36. See the Zuytdorp Cliffs
These stunning cliffs were formed about
5000 to 10,000 years ago when the Earth’s
crust shifted following an earthquake. They
are some of the highest cliffs in Australia
– go and amaze yourself with the sheer
magnitude of them.
37. GO BANANAS
A trip to Carnarvon isn’t complete
without seeing the local banana
plantations. But there are also other
fruits and vegetables to sample – such
as avocados, capsicums and orange
– throughout the Gascoyne region
between July and December.
33. Drive the Gibb River Road
Few outback drives are better than this 700km trek between Derby and
Kununurra. Passing jaw-dropping waterfalls, gorges and red-dirt scenery, it’s
best undertaken in the dry season lasting until mid September.
35. HIKE THE
The Bibbulmun Track meanders
through 1000km of wilderness
between Perth and Albany. It’s
accessible year-round, but the
northern end is better suited to
winter and spring conditions,
while summer days are less
intense in the south. www.
Up north and down south –
there are plenty of regional
cooking classes to try. Cape
Lodge in Yallingup and Faraway
Bay in East Kimberley are two
of the best, with the courses
running from one to three
days at different times. Check
with the operators for more
com.au; www.farawaybay.com.au .
38. EXPERIENCE MARGARET
RIVER SURF CULTURE
Margaret River’s famous beaches deliver waves year-round. Head to Surfers
Point – located on the corner of Ocean View Road and Wallcliffe Road –
for a larger swell. Beginners can try the Margaret River mouth (located off
Prevelly Road) for calmer conditions. Further north, Kalbarri and Geraldton
also offer excellent surf with the chance of sunshine during winter.
