41. Visit Perth
Home to the Art Gallery
of Western Australia, State
Library and Western Australian
Museum, this is bustling with
exhibitions and projects. Don’t
miss the exclusive Picasso
to Warhol: Fourteen Modern
Masters exhibition. www.
39. Relax on Rottnest
The off-season observes a quieter pace on Rottnest, making it a
serene (and conveniently close) destination for Perth locals and
visitors. Stroll along deserted beaches, watch the waves roll in or
hire a bike and cycle around the island.
The gusty beaches of Lancelin
and Geraldton attract wind-
surfers from around the world.
Get swept up in the action
here, or in the ferocious
Margaret River region (only
advisable for those experienced
in the sport). Beginners can
test the smooth waters near
Melville in the Swan River.
43. PICNIC AT
The Araluen Botanic Park comes alive
in spring as the destination for flower
lovers. P icnic amongst the 14ha, and
choose your own spot of paradise.
Barbecue, toilet, and disabled
facilities are available.
42. Uncover the
A gold medal winner in the 2011
WA Tourism Awards, the Jewel
Cave can be found 37km south of
Margaret River in leafy karri forest.
It’s one of few caves in the world
where you can see straw stalactites
measuring up to 5.8m.
44. DIVE THE ROWLEY SHOALS
The remote and untouched Rowley Shoals lay 300km west of Broome,
and are well worth the visit. Attracting divers from around the globe, the
beautiful coral gardens, marine life and clear lagoons are nothing short of
awe-inspiring. Snorkel, dive, beachcomb, or boat – see nearly 600 species
of fish, whales, manta rays, sharks and sailfish.
