Touted as one of the most significant tourism
developments in 20 years, the recently
unveiled Berkeley River Lodge brings a new
level of luxury to the Kimberley Coast.
Twenty ocean-view villas sit atop a coastal
dune at this isolated expanse, which is
perched on the stunning Berkeley River and
surrounded by native vegetation.
The lodge can accommodate up to 40
guests, with packages that include return
scenic floatplane transfers (the only way
to access the spot), accommodation and
meals. Activities such as river and coastal
cruises, 4WD excursions, fishing tours and
guided walks are also included, providing a
quintessential Berkeley River experience.
A century has passed since explorer Charles
Conigrave ‘discovered’ and named the Berkeley
River, remarking that it would one day be “the
haunt of tourists”. Three years ago, another
local pioneer – Martin Peirson-Jones –
followed his sentiments to develop a
multi-million-dollar tourist attraction in
harmony with the natural surrounds.
Each villa has its own balcony with
180-degree views of the river or the Timor
Sea, and boasts a king-sized bed and ensuites
with an open-air freestanding bathtub.
Treks and cruises take you to waterfalls,
rock escarpments and freshwater swimming
holes, and bring you up close and personal with
a variety of flora and fauna.
Take a helicopter journey and see the
Kimberley from a unique vantage point,
or simply laze by the pool and enjoy local
gourmet fare. In this isolated locale, there’s no
phones, no fuss, just pure fresh air and wide
