DISCOVER CULTURE AND HISTORY The history-rich village of
Guildford was one of three towns established during the founding of the
Swan River Colony in 1829. It’s a place where history lives on in quaint
colonial buildings, polo games and Devonshire teas. Take the Guildford
Heritage Walk Trail, which begins at the Old Guildford Courthouse
(Visitor Centre), or the Swan Valley Heritage Cycle Trail. History and
motoring buffs shouldn’t miss Whiteman Park with its special transport
museums, and there’s also a boat cruise from the city that traces Captain
Stirling’s historic journey of 1827.
INDULGE YOUR SWEET TOOTH With more than 90 tearooms, cafes
and restaurants, and producers of fresh nougat, honey, chocolate
and ice-cream, it’s not hard to get a sugar kick from a couple of hours
in the Valley. A number of venues offer decadent high teas; most
wineries produce sweet wines, plus there’s an apiary where you can
see bees make honey and then taste the sweet nectar yourself. Visit
an ice-creamery that transforms the famous Swan Valley fruits into
mouth-watering ice-creams, sorbets, sherbets and granitas.
TAKE A TOUR The Swan Valley is famous for its creative, fun-filled
tours, taking groups and solo travellers through the many taste
sensations and scenic experiences on offer. There’s everything from
coach tours, river cruises and guided walks to helicopter flights and
horse-drawn wagon rides. They’re a great way to spend birthdays,
hens’ parties, work dos – any occasion, really. You can find packages
tailored to progressive lunches, adventure activities, art and wildlife
experiences, even wine making, which includes a behind-the-scenes
tour at a renowned winery.
