PEEL AND MANDURAH
Whether you’re experienced or new at rafting, if it rains enough in
winter the whitewater rapids make the Murray its challenging best.
Few paddlers kayak the 25km from Pinjarra to the estuary, most
preferring the 14km paddle from Ravenswood to the Peel Zoo. Hire
watercraft and gear in Dwellingup, Ravenswood and Mandurah
on the western foreshore. Tours are also available. Canoe Week in
August is held in various locations around the region.
Pick up a copy of the free Birdwatching Trail Guide because
some species are specific to an area. Watch out for the rare marsh
sandpiper at Mandurah Quays and from the Len Howard bird-hide;
thousands of black swans near South Yunderup (they breed from
October to March); the colourful rainbow bird all the way from the
Solomon Islands and New Guinea, between October and February
at Lake Clifton in Yalgorup National Park; and raptors such as kites,
osprey and sea-eagles around the estuary.
When the wildflowers start blooming in spring, explore the many
walking trails in the Yalgorup National Park or head to Dwellingup
and Lane Poole Reserve to access the Bibbulmun Track and Munda
Biddi mountain bike trail. The Department of Environment and
Conservation’s scenic 61km Waterous off-road cycling trail starts at
Lake Navarino and meanders through the rolling hills of the Darling
Scarp connecting the Waroona Dam with the Munda Biddi Trail at
Lane Poole Reserve. Hire bikes in Dwellingup and Mandurah.
TIPS: OPENING TIMES
Check to see when attractions are open. Hotham Valley Railway’s ‘steam ranger’ only goes twice on Sundays from
May to October, and the Dwellingup Forest Train operates on weekends and public holidays throughout the year.
