GO TO THE RACES
Buy your designer fascinator and outfit in Pinjarra and head north of
town for thoroughbred racing at Pinjarra Park. Operating since 1891,
ursday and weekend meetings are the most popular. On the other side
of town, the Pinjarra Harness Racing Club track at Pinjarra Paceway is a
1000m track considered the best in WA, boasting a brand new spectator
pavilion. Pinjarra Paceway races most Mondays.
GET HOOKED FOR LIFE
e Murray River is a haven for local small boat fishermen in winter. e
black bream are over 1kg and head downstream a whole lot hungrier
than they are in summer. e best places to catch them are the islands
towards the estuary and the feeders that lead into the river -- although
some say they have been caught as far away as the Ravenswood
Raceway! Come September, the fish start moving upstream again, about
2km from the Ravenswood hotel. Did you know? You don't need a
licence to fish from kayaks because they have no engine.
GO SEE THE CLOTS
e word 'thrombolite' means 'clot', and Lake Clifton is home
to a reef colony of over 6km long and 120m wide. Regarded as
the largest thrombolite colony in the southern hemisphere, it is
world-famous and well worth seeing. Access the boardwalk lookout
via the scenic Clifton Downs/Mount John loop road off Old Coast Road
and enjoy the many walks in the Yalgorup National Park from here.
ere is a winery for lunch, orchards and stunning country scenery
along the loop road.
Drive | ere are three options to choose from: the speedy
Kwinana Freeway, the leisurely rural South Western
Highway or the coastal Fremantle to Rockingham route.
Train | To Mandurah there are daily departures from Perth
city every 10 to 15 minutes. Via the Australind train, there
is a route through Pinjarra and Waroona. ere is no train
that connects Pinjarra and Dwellingup at the moment.
