GEOGRAPHE AND BUNBURY
Car | The Old Coast Road is just 1.5 hours to Harvey, or
take the freeway and hit Bunbury in two hours. The South
Western Highway is a slightly slower, but more scenic drive.
Bus | Buses depart from Brunswick Junction and Bunbury
for Collie twice daily, Monday to Friday.
Train | The Australind train travels twice daily from Perth to
Bunbury, with stops at Harvey and Brunswick Junction.
What makes the wine so fine? | The Geographe region has more than
1200ha under vines, and is home to some of WA’s most promising
wine producers. There are four distinct wine-producing districts:
Harvey, Ferguson Valley, Donnybrook and Capel. Each has its own
soil type, but it is the influence of the cooling afternoon sea breezes
off Geographe Bay that drives the distinctive wine style. Call into any
of the small vineyard cellar doors and you’re likely to be greeted by
‘Finding’ Ferguson Valley | Just 15 minutes drive from bustling
Bunbury, Ferguson Valley is home to artists, artisans and winemakers.
Most of the wineries and eateries only open on weekends so it’s wise
to book ahead. While there are no ‘hotels’, there are some great B&Bs
and farmstays. Henty Road from Burekup on the South Western
Highway is a spectacular drive. Where it meets Pile Road, you’ll find
wineries, restaurants and a microbrewery with a playground. If you see
a ploughman’s on the menu, try it!
GET ON YOUR BIKE
Mountain bikers head for the Munda Biddi Trail which meanders 500km
through spectacular bushland, passing through Collie and Donnybrook
on its way to Nannup. The Sika Circuit near Collie is a looped track that
comes off the Trail near Wellington Dam. The Mt Lennard Mountain
Bike Area in the Wellington National Park consists of 40km of trails,
including the challenging ‘Grizzly Trail’.
Call in to the Visitor Centres to pick up a list of the best spots to go.
Popular places are Crooked Brook Forest, Flora Road Scenic Drive in the
Wellington National Park, Wildflower Picnic Site at Honeymoon Road,
and the Korijekup Nature Reserve in Harvey.
After good rains Logue Brook Dam (near Harvey), Stockton Lake (7km
from Collie) and Glen Mervyn Dam are fantastic for water-skiing.
Minninup Pool on the Collie River and Long Pool (downstream from
Wellington Dam) are calm stretches of the river, great for canoeing or
swimming. Other sites include the Rapids, Big Rock and Little Rock in
Wellington National Park.
TAKE A WALK
The Bibbulmun Track winds its way through the bush to Collie, where
weary walkers can enjoy a welcome shower. For the day trekker, there
are beautiful walks through Wellington National Park, and Collie River
Walk on the edge of town is a good one for the family, with 10km to
meander down. Crooked Brook Forest has four walking trails including a
sealed, wheelchair-accessible 600m walk with interpretive signage.
