Ancient basalt rock formations
deposited thousands of years
ago by volcanic lava flows are
now a distinctive feature on
Bunbury’s Back Beach.
Home to over 60 species of
water birds, the city’s 20,000
year-old white mangroves
are believed to be the most
southern population of their
kind in Australia.
Includes the world’s largest
remaining pure forest of tuart, and
the tallest and largest tuart on the
Swan Coastal Plain, some more
than 33m high and 10m round.
The park has 17,000ha of jarrah,
marri and yarri, stunning water
and rapids in the Collie River Valley,
plus picnic spots, rocky outcrops
and wildflowers in Spring.
Plan your drive
It can be a long way between stops, driving in the bush. On the
Forrest Highway/Old Coast Road route south from Perth, until
you’re almost at Bunbury, there are only two petrol stations (one
each side of the road), and just one other toilet stop. There are
more in the towns along South West Highway, but you won’t find
too many petrol stations or shops between the towns, so you’ll
need to plan ahead.
Don’t get caught without a fishing licence
Freshwater fishing in the dams and rivers of the Geographe
requires Department of Fisheries permits (available from Fisheries
offices, online at www.fish.wa .gov.au and Australia Post outlets).
Open season for rainbow and brown trout runs September 1 to
April 30 (most waters in the Harvey Shire are closed to fishing
from May 1 to August 31). Bag and size limits apply.
Check conditions before heading off
In any of the State or National Parks, make sure you have up-to-
date maps, and have contacted the DEC and/or Visitor Centre
to make sure there are no route closures due to maintenance or
Looking for a feed?
Many of the wineries, cafes and restaurants outside the towns
open only on weekends so it’s best to phone ahead to check. In the
towns, you can bet on finding a great meal any day of the week in
the local pub.
