HIKERS AND WALKERS
Bald Head is a six- to eight-hour round walk. Follow the
cairns to stay on track for spectacular coastal views at the
end. For a gentler stroll, walk Emu Point to Middleton –
you can buy cake at both ends.
For great whale-spotting potential, head to Ellen Cove
boardwalk. At night, you can hear whales calling. Cheynes
Beach is great for watching frolicking whale cows and
calves, or you can get super close on a boat tour.
The wind farm and Whale World are great entertainers
for children. The Gap, Blowholes and Natural Bridge will
wear them out – grab a local pinot on the way home for
some well-deserved kids-gone-to-bed indulgence time.
If there’s no wind, head to Oyster or Princess Royal
harbours. The Kalgan and King rivers are best when
windy. For ver y experienced kayakers, King River has the
best rapids – but go with a buddy. Middleton Beach and
Emu Point are good for ocean kayaking.
•• Many cafes close at 3pm. You can get a late afternoon coffee fix
at cafes near Middleton Beach, Emu Point and on Sanford Road
•• Ask for local recommendations if heading out to surf or fish
•• Locals say petrol is cheaper on Tuesdays
Great for kids - a dose of significant WA history in a spectacular hill
top setting. After your visit, take Marine Drive to Middleton Beach for
stunning coastal views.
The uninterrupted 360-degree views of the ocean and Albany town make
the climb up the 100 or so steps well worth the effort!
Walk Ellen Cove boardwalk at dusk or night for a chance to spot the rare
nocturnal honey possum. In winter and spring, listen for whales “mooing
like strained cows”.
